Arrawarra Sharing Culture Diary


		The idea for Arrawarra: Sharing Culture resulted from a meeting in late 2004 between Garby Elders and members of the organisations that later formed the project committee. The opening of the fish traps, planned for Easter 2006, determined the timing of the project.
		August 2005	Application for funding submitted to the Environmental Trust, Environmental Education Program.
		January 2006	First full set of gugumbal surveys.
		February 2006	First meetings of the project committee to discuss the timeline for the project.
		April 2006	Arrawarra fish traps reopened for traditional fishing. ‘Arrawarra koori fish traps back in action’ Coffs Harbour Advocate, 13 April 2006. ‘Prehistoric fish traps the focus of cross-cultural project’ UNE News and Events, April 11 2006.
		May 2006	Completion of the artworks for the project by Alison Williams.
		November 2006	The first training workshop at Station Creek. Presentation of paper on the project at the 15th NSW Coastal Conference, Coffs Harbour.
		December 2006	Presentation of a poster on gugumbal at the national Molluscs 2006 conference, Wollongong.
		May 2007	Framed artworks by Alison Williams are open for display at the Wadjar Art Gallery at Yarrarwarra Cultural Centre.
		July 2007	A three-day training workshop was conducted at Station Creek. This included conducting gugumbal surveys as well as finding and trying different types of bush tucker.
		September 2007	Sydney Weekender films a section about the fish traps. Following on from this, the first attempt to use the traps using traditional methods since the 1970s was completed during a 'blue moon'. Smith, S., Mohring, M. and Davey, A. 		December 2007	Traditional and cultural activities organised for local primary schools at Arrawarra Headland. ‘Day of learning about Aboriginal traditions’ Coffs Harbour Advocate, 12 December 2007.
		July 2008	Hosted production crew for ABC Message Stick from 28 July to 1 August. This involved interviews with Garby Elders and the Project Team. Filming occurred at the fish traps, on the foreshores of Corindi River, at Station Creek, and at key sites at Red Rock.
